Chemiluminescence is centred around two groups of women. Helen and Anna are in their late forties while Dianne and Tracette are navigating their way through the trials of adolescence. Helen and Anna are facing both health crises and marriage woes which draws them together as they try and understand what has happened to them and what they are also facing. For Dianne and Tracette their problems are more immediate as they begin their journey towards self-determination amid the pressures teenage girls both put on themselves as well as the expectations on them to conform in the pressure-cooker world of school coupled with their need to break free from family constraints and so forge their own destinies.
